As CTER students, your communication with one another and with your instructors depends on computer software. Discussion, handing in of assignments, and receiving feedback on your work from faculty and classmates are facilitated with the following programs:
Netscape Communicator 4.6 (included on the CTER2 CD-ROM, for Macintosh and Windows) -
The latest version of this web browser is our standard for viewing and creating web pages. Each course will be built around a set of web pages, and you will create additional web pages for many of your assignments. Netscape "plug-ins" enable multimedia content to be displayed on the web - one that we will rely on is the RealAudio G2 player, which permits audio to be "streamed" to a web browser. The "Composer" feature of Netscape Communicator offers a simple way to create web pages. You will upload these pages to your individual accounts on the Learning Resources Server , maintained by the U of I College of Education and the CTER program.
(You may also use other web page editing software to create your pages; some possibilities are web editors like Microsoft Front Page or Claris HomePage, or a word processor such as Microsoft Word which can save as HTML, or plain-text editors such as Windows Notepad and BBEdit for Mac. However, we can provide support only for Netscape Communicator 4.6.)
CTER students are responsible for ensuring that the computers they will use for completing their coursework will run Netscape 4.6 with common plug-ins. CTER Technical Support cannot assist with problems encountered by students running other web browsers (the America Online browser, in particular, will not be supported).
CTERbase (accessible via a web browser at http://lrsdb.ed.uiuc.edu/newcter) -
CTERbase is a web-enabled database that you will use for turning in some of your assignments. CTERbase enables CTER instructors and students to track their process on assignments via a web interface.
WebBoard 2.0 (accessible via a web browser at http://webboard.outreach.uiuc.edu:8080/~name_of_class)
Each CTER course will have a separate WebBoard discussion list. WebBoard offers two kinds of discussion - asynchronous threaded discussions (similar to email) and synchronous (real-time) chats.
FTP software (Fetch 3.04 for Macintosh and WS_FTP LE for Windows are available on the CTER2 CD-ROM) -
Each of these freeware programs assists with the process of uploading web pages and other files to a web server such as the Learning Resource Server. Fetch and WS_FTP can each be used to place files and entire directories on your server account, and to create and rename directories.Note that downloading files from a server to your own computer can be accomplished either with these programs, or directly from the Netscape web browser. Netscape Composer can also upload single web pages to a server, via its "Publish" feature. However, the ability to rename files and handle entire directories makes it well worth the effort to install and learn to use Fetch or WS_FTP instead.
Additional recommendations
In addition to Netscape Communicator, CTERbase and WebBoard, we recommend that CTER students use a robust email program - Eudora Pro is licensed for use by all UIUC students and is included on the CTER2 CD-ROM. A good antivirus program is also highly recommended - the CTER2 CD-ROM contains recent versions of two commercial antivirus programs licensed for use by all UIUC students: Virex for the Macintosh, and Dr. Solomon's Antivirus Toolit for Windows 95/98. Users should update their antivirus programs often - monthly updates are available for Virex and Dr. Solomon (the versions on the CD are current to July 1999).
