How to Transfer Files using Fetch (Mac)

  1. Launch Fetch on your hard disk. A New Connection screen will appear.

  2. Enter lrs.ed.uiuc.edu as the host.
  3. Enter your login as the UserID.
    On the LRS server, your login is often your UIUC netid. Or your first initial and last name.
  4. Enter your password and click OK. Once connected, a screen showing the contents of your account will appear.

    Directories appear as folders, files appear with a page icon. Double click on a folder to enter that directory.
     
     To upload files from your Mac:

    To upload one file, click Put file.

    •  To upload a folder or several files, from the Fetch menu at the top select Remote, Put Directories and Files.

       After you've selected the file(s), Fetch will prompt you to choose the formats for the uploaded file(s).

    • To upload text files such as SimpleText or HTML (Web) documents, select Text
    • To upload gifs or jpegs that you plan to use as part of a Web site, select Raw Data.

      (These files are binary but must be loaded as Raw Data to ensure that all Web browsers can view them)
       
      To upload binary files such as programs or word processed documents that you plan to download to another Mac, select MacBinary II

  5. (Alternatively, you can drag the file from your local desktop into the remote file list.)

To download files to your Mac:
 
 To download one file or a folder, click on the filename or folder in the Fetch window and the click Get File. (Or you can drag the file from the list onto your local desktop.)

  • To download several files, hold the command key down and click on the filenames and then press Get Files.
