              strangle me"

SusanH exclaims, "Thank god for virtual reality!"

MuffyP says, "Jim, I lost the CTER Map"

JillMM says, "for all I've asked of them"

MuffyP says, "It says I'm home but I'm seeing the Log in Screen"

JimL says, "okay first up is Darren Loschen. Let's wait one more minute
            for everyone to arrive."

SusanH asks, "Where's the hot tub?"

JimL says, "Sorry, no hot tub. But we do have a fireplace."

DarrenL holds up a BIG sign: Hello!
SusanH exclaims, "HI, Darren!"

MuffyP has disconnected.
JillMM says, "Jim, I tried petting dog but nothing happened"

GlendaB says, "are we ready"

JimL gathers some tinder, strikes a match and lights a fire in the
fireplace...
.. the fire begins to burn brightly and you feel warm and cozy...

fireplace...
.. the fire begins to burn brightly and you feel warm and cozy...
JimL asks, "Darren?"

DarrenL says, "hello"

JimL asks, "Ready to start?"

JaneGB exclaims, "I'm sitting in my cold basement, so a fire sounds
                  good!!"

.. the fire crackles and pops...
DarrenL says, "I have to keep typing say"

DarrenL says, "My project was entitled Study Center. It involved
building web pages that contained the current homework
assignments and topics in the classrooms at Armstrong
               Township High School."

LeonardF has arrived.
JimL says, "click on the little popup box to the right and change "type
            command" to "say""

JimL says, "oops. popup box to the left."

.. the light from the fire casts shadows all about..
DarrenL says, "I was looking to gather information about people visiting
our schools site. Only 15 surveys were returned. Of
those fifteen returned, 14 responded that they have
Internet access at home, or at work, or at both. I found
this number very promising. Only 5 knew the school had a
website with only 4 visiting it. Of those 4 that visited
the website, 2 made it to the Study Center."

DarrenL says, "sorry wrong spot"

DarrenL says, "My plan was to use students in one of my classes to help
build the pages and search for links that related to the
topics. I also relied on the teachers to give me their
current topics and activities. I was hoping with this
activity teachers would look to integrate the Internet
more into their lessons. In addition, I wanted to keep
the parents/guardians informed of their students
               activities in the classroom."

.. the fire grows cold and burns out with a trailing wisp of smoke..
LeonardF writes on the whiteboard...
DarrenL says, "The first set of pages was posted at the beginning of
November with only five classes. After about a week with
the Study Center up and running, I sent out a survey to 60
randomly selected parents/guardians of students in the
district. I also sent a set of four questions to the
               teachers."

DarrenL says, "I was looking to gather information about people visiting
our schools site. Only 15 surveys were returned. Of

the website, 2 made it to the Study Center."

DarrenL says, "We are looking to publicize our site morefrom
suggestions. We are also looking to add more classes,
which those that responded would like to see. Some
respondents were very pleased with the work we had done
and hoped we would keep it up. I raised a lot of
               curiosity with the survey."

LindaN has connected.
JimL says, "one minute, Darren"

DarrenL says, "As for the teachers, I have only received four replies.
All feel the Study Center is a good idea if it is kept
current. They would also like more linkswhich is one area
we are trying to work on. One teacher was really happy
about this project, and even provides websites for us. We
are looking to add these. This encouraged me. Just like
students, if I can reach just one teacher, I guess that is
               a pretty good job."

DarrenL says, "I feel this project is at its beginning stages and can be
expanded. One of the toughest parts of this project is
getting the teachers to respond. I have to keep on them
to get me information. Most are beginning to warm to idea
of using more technology in the classroom. We are
currently up to 15 classes, but all are not up to date."

DarrenL says, "I will now project the Study Center web page"

DarrenL projects the URL:
  http://www.armstrong.k12.il.us/study/studyctr.htm
DarrenL asks, "did that work?"

SusanH exclaims, "yes!"

TerenceS says, "yes great"

JennaMB says, "Yes, great job"

MarnaK says, "It worked great."

JimL asks, "Worked for me. Very nice, Darren. Questions?"

JaneGB exclaims, "good job, neat site!"

MuffyP asks, "Have you been able to keep the site updated?"

ElizabethT says, "Even though there weren't a lot of surveys returned,
sounds like the survey did a good job educating"

DarrenL says, "my project is located at
               http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/dloschen/study.htm"

ElizabethT exclaims, "HTant's important!"

GretchenH gets Halloween_Candy_2153 from the vending machine.
DarrenL says, "we are trying"

TerenceS asks, "you are letting teachers update their section or are you
                doing it for them?"

SusanH asks, "Jim--that fire went out pretty quickly. Were you a boy
              scout?"

JennaMB asks, "How are your students reacting to doing the updates,
               ect.?"

DarrenL says, "Right now I am updating along with the students"

DarrenL says, "They now come in the room and ask for updates. They want
               to get them posted"

NeldaB asks, "Eventually, do you want to turn it over to the teachers
              and students to keep updated?"

TerenceS asks, "do you have a policy to review student work, before
                publishing?"

DarrenL says, "I would like the teachers to do it."

GlendaB asks, "How does the School Board "see" this site?"

DarrenL says, "I think my class will always be involved."

JillMM says, "I felt like I had to wtch my kids like a hawk when
editing. I really trust them but you never know"

JennaMB asks, "Do you evaluate the web site before posting them or
               offering to teachers?"

MarnaK asks, "Since you already die the hard part of developing the
site, why not have the teachers update their own
              assignments?"

LeonardF writes on the whiteboard...
JimL says, "great job, Darren."

GretchenH says, "wh/ JimL I didn't think you could see that. Sorry for
                 interrupting. : )"

SusanH says, "me too."

JennaMB asks, "I cannot remember, what program did you use to make the
               pages?"

JimL applauds.

DarrenL says, "Yes I evaluate them"

LindaN leaves for the 5th.
GlendaB exclaims, "Nice jon Darren!!"

DarrenL says, "I used front page along with some html commands"

LindaN has arrived.
JillMM says, "like that comw, terence"

JimL says, "okay, next is Terry."

DarrenL holds up a BIG sign: Thanks everyone
TerenceS says, "I can but schecduel says muffy"

JimL says, "oops, yes, muffy."

MuffyP exclaims, "Hello!"

MuffyP says, "I'm going to project 3 webpages within my 5 inutes"

MuffyP says, "please let me know if i move too fast."

MuffyP projects first.
---------------
My project dealt with inservicing teachers in my school building on
creating classroom web pages. I chose to start with my 4th grade
teaching team as they are the most tech savey in the building and really
wanted to get started with web pages.
---------------
MuffyP projects 1.
---------------
When I started the project, creating classroom webpages for teachers in
my school, I wanted to be very loose with the design. However, after
meeting with the 4th grade teachers prior to the inservice, this idea
made them quite nervous. They really wanted to spend time on the
fundamentals of the application. So, I created a template that would
teach them the basics, but still allow them to have a finished product
at the end of the inservice.

---------------
LindaN writes on the whiteboard...
MuffyP says, "I'm going to project the template now."

MuffyP projects 2.
---------------

---------------
MuffyP projects the URL:
  http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/jpacey/major%20project/yournamehere.htm
MuffyP asks, "did you get that?"

PatriciaDM has arrived.
GretchenH says, "yes. looks great."

DarrenL has disconnected.
MuffyP projects 3.
---------------
I also created quick start guides, or manuals that would guide them
through the application. The guides would also help them in using the
program on their own after the inservice.

The webpage consists of a list of the PDF files that show the quick
start guides. In order to see the files, you may have to download them
to see the actual guides which will take too long in my 5 minute time
limit.

---------------
MuffyP projects 5.
---------------
I used the template and the guides to show the teachers the basics of
Claris Home Page. By the end of our two hour session, all the teachers
had a finished webpage ready to post. What was most surprising to me was
that all the pages looked so unique. I was convinced the templates would
set us up for "cookie cutter" webpages. I'll show one completed page,
but there are several on my webpage.
---------------
MuffyP says, "I'm going to project one teacher's page now."

MuffyP projects 6.
---------------

---------------
MuffyP projects the URL:

http://wilmette.nttc.org/wilmette/harper/HarperTeacherPages/pammcnish.htm
MuffyP asks, "Did you get that?"

SusanH says, "yes"

JimL says, "yes, quite different from your template."

SusanH says, "good ole nttc."

ElizabethT says, "yes"

MuffyP projects 9.
---------------
After the inservice, I asked the teachers to fill out a survey. I wanted
to see if the teachers would actually attempt to use Claris Home Page
outside of the inservice. The next page will project the survey answers.
---------------
MuffyP says, "I'll project the survey page now."

MuffyP projects 10.
---------------

---------------
MuffyP projects the URL:
  http://cternt1.ed.uiuc.edu/surveyit/summarize.cfm?surveyid=92
MuffyP says, "Overall, the inservice went really well. The teachers are
              already asking for more."

MuffyP asks, "Any questions?"

JimL says, "Nice to hear "teach us more" from a teacher in a workshop -
            very encouraging."

JillMM says, "I looked the the diff teachers pages this a m and they
              look great"

JaneGB exclaims, "you did a great job!"

PatriciaDM exclaims, "nice work!"

GretchenH says, "I love the teacher pages. I'd like to use them as
                 templates."

ElizabethT exclaims, "the teachers were very positive! They didnt start
out with much experienmce. Good job!"

LindaN says, "Very Nice!!!(To talk, type here and press return)"

MuffyP says, "Please feel free to use anything."

ToddMi says, "Cool survey, easier that counting papers ; )"

JennaMB asks, "Where did you get the survey again?"

MuffyP says, "Jim tipped me off on a survey building website"

JimL says, "That was created by one of our grad students. Let me know
if anyone wants to use it."

MuffyP says, "I don't have the URL off hand, but I'll post it in
              WebBoard"

JennaMB asks, "Can you send that out or post on webboard in your project
               site?"

LindaN asks, "Could we have that URL again?"

JennaMB says, "Thanks"

JillMM says, "Good, I was wanting todo online survey but didn't"

MarnaK has lost her link.
DebB <- great site>
JennaMB holds up a BIG sign: Great job!
MarnaK has connected.
MuffyP exclaims, "Thank you!"

LindaN says, "An Illinois update fighting Illini up 38-32 at half."

JimL applauds.

JimL also applauds the Illini.

ToddMi says, "Can't do that in a classroom"

JimL says, "Very nice job Muffy."

MuffyP says, "Thank you."

JimL asks, "Terry, you ready to go next?"

TerenceS says, "yes"

LeonardF says, "Really good job."

TerenceS says, "Excuse me while I get this mic connected here"

TerenceS says, "thanks Muffy"

JimL asks, "Have you focused the overhead projector also, terry?"

TerenceS says, "also please excusst my typing"

TerenceS says, "getting to that"

TerenceS says, "ok"

TerenceS says, "I don't type fast or accurate so my note projections are
                litle bit"

TerenceS says, "big not bt"

TerenceS says, "so ..."

I am the tech director for a Regional Office of Education

I work with 27 districts as tech consultant, organize trainings, some
tech support ... by default, I work most directly with the district Tech
Coordinators

Being seen as an "outsider" to the district it is always interesting to
hear the comments from teachers and tech staff about working with each
other :)

---------------
TerenceS projects Note_Concept.
---------------
<<>>
My project was to put together resources for the typical classroom
teacher to assist them in troubleshooting technology problems, and to
faciliate communication with the district Tech Coordinator or tech
support staff when solving a problem.

I included some sample forms and policies, some basic "how stuff works"
info, some common problems and fixes, and some links to vendor tech
support knowledgebases

After some discussions in class about troubleshooting software problems
as well as hardware problems I wanted to find a way to approach the
software problems.

I felt that the best approach was to give some understanding of software
issues, encourage them to document and note "error codes" and then to
use vendor "knowledgebases to search for solutions using those errors.

I worked with the Windows-Intel platform since most of my expierience is
there ... and my districts have few Macs.

---------------
TerenceS says, "I was expecially interested in ways to attach software
                problems"

TerenceS projects Note_Goals.
---------------
<<<>>>
1. Provide districts an organized way to approach problem solving and
expedite the process of trouble shooting and maintaining computers

2. Provide samples of documentation and communication between levels of
tech support

3. Create an on-line flow for classroom teachers to guide them through
some basic common problems, but utilimately lead them to professional
vendor support sites.

<<>>
1. Do classroom teachers desire to understand why problems occur and how
to fix common problems?

2. Can the overall communication within a district between classroom
teacher, district tech staff, and outside vendors be enhanced and result
in better overall problem solving and system reliability for the
classroom teacher?

3. If guided through some basic levels, is is possible to lead classroom
teacher to professional vendor knowledgebases, and will they use them to
research their own problems?

TerenceS projects Note_Resources.
---------------
<<>>
* basic "how it works info"
* sample policies, documents, and inventory forms
* a recommended flow of communication between levels of support
* checklist of common tips --> leading to knowledgebase
* free on-line checkup resources
* links to other good troubleshooting resouces
* an on-line Trouble Ticket sample form to try

---------------
SusanH has connected.
TerenceS says, "the overall menu and number or resources proved to be a
                little much for beginners"

TerenceS projects Note_Testing.
---------------
<<>>
I had many users view the site and was able to get about 25 teachers and
tech coord spend some time actually using the CyberGeek site. I probably
did not get any real "newbies" using it, but did get users with a
variety of levels of expertise

I asked them to complete Pre & Post Surveys. I also got some good
feedback via e-mail and telephone calls I made to a few as follow up.

I wanted to find out
* how much time they were willing to work on a problem
* their current approach to problem solving
* their opinion of their district support policies
* which resources they would find useful
* given resources were they willing to try to research their own problems
* IF when guided to vendor knowledgebases, WOULD they use them????

---------------
ElizabethT says, "i can go first"

TerenceS says, "the most used part was the basic info section"

TerenceS says, "I am projecting it next"

TerenceS projects cg_defense.

TerenceS projects the URL:

TerenceS says, "this is not was I expected or wanted really"

ElizabethT says, "beth whispers, okay"

TerenceS says, "I wanted to get them deeper"

TerenceS projects Note_Findings.
---------------
<<>>
* I received many favorable comments and good general reaction to the
CyberGeek site.

* For classroom teachers and mid to low skill level users, their main
interest was the most general backgound info on "how stuff works".

* District Tech people were interested in the basic info too, which
surprised me. But as I expected they also reacted to the trouble ticket
forms and on-line version. (one district adopted it)

* Several used the free on-line checkup and virus scanners (maybe
because they said "free")

* I recieve little feedback on the time users were willing to spend on
problem solving

* Almost no-one proceeded to use the vendor knowledgebase, BUT with
personal followup and explaination two did try then both indicated a
willingness to try them on their own.

* I received lots of good suggestions for how to modify and improve the
site along with requests to continue work on the idea because they did
want to use it and share with their peers.

---------------
LindaN leaves for the 5th.
TerenceS says, "I really wanted to get the into the knowledgebases"

LindaN has arrived.
TerenceS says, "here is a set of education pages"

JimL says, "one minute Terry."

TerenceS projects cg_knowledge.
---------------

---------------
TerenceS projects the URL:
  http://training.sas.k12.il.us/cybergeek/educational.htm
TerenceS projects Note_Plans.
---------------
<<>>
* I do plan to use many of the suggestions I received and continue
developing the CyberGeek resource, because it does support part of my
current job responsiblity.

* I will break the information up into smaller sections
* will add more "screen shots" to go along with the descriptions
* will go ahead and create the "routine maintenance" section
* will REWORK and BETTER EXPLAIN the purpose of the knowledgebase
section ... giving some examples and bringing it closer to the top of
the site
* I may modify the openning screen to let the user self-rate themselves
(newbie, average, guru) and then the menus they see will try to present
choices appropriate to their experience level

---------------
JimL says, "Great job, Terry."

JillMM says, "Terence, I learned a few things this morning while reading
your site. It would take some time to really absorb it
all. I love the name by the way."

JimL applauds

JimL asks, "questions?"

BrianME exclaims, "Good Job!"

SusanH holds up a BIG sign:
MarnaK says, "Your idea for changing the opening screen sounds good."

LeonardF says, "Very interesting"

JimL says, "I love the concept of "defensive computing""

TerenceS says, "thanks, but please give me comments since I plan to
                continue"

PatriciaDM says, "How do you think you can get the beginners to use your
                  site? Nice work."

ElizabethT exclaims, "Super Job!"

JaneGB says, "I liked the "defensive" section too - good simple tips to
              use"

TerenceS says, "I am going to try a limited menu and more pictures"

JimL says, "Good approach for novices."

JillMM says, "I need a printed copyof basic cuz if computer is down
              can't et to site"

GlendaB says, "Terry, I think you need to break it down into smaller
               pieces for newbies"

JimL says, "Glenda Bequette is next. Glenda--"

GlendaB says, "I'm ready"

GlendaB says, "Good Afternoon to Everyone!! As an employee of ISBE I
get asked to present a lot for conferences/workshops, etc
(Ill be at FETC in 3 weeks). This has mushroomed since
               ISBE instituted the new professional
               development/recertification requirements. Sometimes, I
               catch myself coming and going."

GlendaB says, "One of the more popular presentations that I am giving
is, WebQuests: The Internet Scavenger Hunt. One of the
major questions I received is, Is there one site that is
more reliable than another? I use to mention the WebQuest
page that got it all started but unfortunately like so
many other sites it hasnt been updated in ages and has
               web rot."

GlendaB says, "Initially, I wanted to burn a CD that would contain many
of my resources that I provide in my sessions so that
participants could make changes to my documents that would
be useful to them. However, Jim suggested that I develop
a set of web pages that in essence would do the same
               thing. WA LA my project."

GlendaB says, "Project goals:"

GlendaB says, "Since starting this project, I have made some mental
changes about how I want the pages to look and have
already started thinking about how to better use it in a
day-long session as compared to a conference session."

GlendaB says, "Ive also created an on-site evaluation the results will
be e-mailed to me. Ive tried to categorize: templates,
WWW sites, articles, How tos, etc. I dont expect this to
be a one size fits all site but we have so many good
sites out there and no one has organized all of the
separate pieces together. I found Spartanburg School
District to have some great resources but their pages are
so convoluted that its hard to weed out the chaff from the
               seeds."

GlendaB exclaims, "Im going to project the main page if you have
speakers I would suggest that you turn them down or
up depending on whether or not you wish to listen to
                   the music of 2001!!"

is down. Someone recommended it to me who is also

GlendaB says, "My best hope is that this site can be used for beginners
and technology trainers as a training tool."

JimL asks, "very nice, Glenda. Questions?"

GlendaB exclaims, "That's all FOLKS!!"

ElizabethT says, "I'll be sure to fill out the web survey. Your site is
very good. WIsh I had seen it before I had done my
                  quest"

MarnaK says, "The suggestion to make the webpages instead of the CD
              allows for updates and revisions."

SusanH says, "Nice job, Glenda. Very comprehensive site."

ElizabethT exclaims, "I used webquewst page. Hope its not too rotten!"

JillMM says, "It looks great. I signed in on bravenet on someone's
guest book this a. m and I think it worked."

TerenceS exclaims, "Glenda you continue to have some of the best samples
                    around!"

TimAR says, "(To talk, type here and press return)Nice job Glenda..I
             liked the music"

GlendaB says, "SOmeone just filled out a survey -- I've already received
               an e-mail"

LindaN says, "I am going to share this site with my staff at my next
              professional development day."

PatriciaDM says, "I would like a CD also for those sites that don't have
web access -- like my school."

JimL says, "You can also take your website at any point and burn it onto
            a cd-rom."

LeonardF says, "Here's something I could use. Thank you for the great
                job"

BrianME says, "Great site, I really like the site. A cd to go with
               would be nice extra"

JimL holds up a BIG sign: Great job Glenda!
GlendaB says, "I get alot of comments -- you don't have enough for Grade
X and what I was hoping to do was to provide a good flavor
               at each grade grouping"

JimL applauds.

JimL asks, "Next up is Jenna Bryant. Ready Jenna?"

JaneGB exclaims, "I'm impressed!"

JennaMB says, "Yes..."

GlendaB says, "we still have lots of school in IL without internet --
               thus the CD"

---------------
I teach Spanish I to seventh and eighth graders at Mahomet-Seymour
Junior High. These students have to have a certain grade point average
to get in to my classes. They are expected to take up to 5 years of
Spanish in all. I wanted to implement a project to keep these high
achieving students motivated and challenge them a little on the side.
My first thought was a newsletter for my class and then finally after
talking to the Gifted Coordinator we decided to team up. Actually it was
my project that he just helped with the topics. Not complaining,
because I appreciated his time he allowed for my students to work in his
room.
---------------
JaneGB exclaims, "I'm pasting the URL for my web site for you to click
on if you'd like to have a look!"

JaneGB says, "OOPs, didn't mean to do that"

JennaMB projects Intro.
---------------
My project was called Connecting Students and Curriculum. I implemented
a newsletter into my Spanish classes in connection with an Advanced
Geography course. The instructor and I had at least 7 students that
were in both of our classes. The thematic units of the Advanced
Geography course tied in well with the culture I wanted to study in my
Spanish courses.

---------------
JennaMB projects Topics.
---------------
The main resource for research in this project was all internet based.
The students had to find websites related to the first topics which
were: Mexico s new president, NAFTA, main geographic points, Day of the
Dead, and then they could choose a topic of their own from sports,
tourism, and culture. The geography students were writing two articles:
1.) from related material in geography and 2.) a topic of their choice.
One of my students focused on the holiday of Day of the Dead.

---------------
JennaMB says, "This first issue was very involved because we both were
               teaching material and the technology."

JennaMB says, "The students were excited though about the Topics and
this helped to ease them into new technologies."

JennaMB says, "In fact, we view Channel 1 in our district and one
student email them to run a dayon the new Mexican
               president."

JennaMB projects Motivation.
---------------
The interest in the project and motivation to work on it everyday was
incredible. The students were giving up parts of their lunch and extra
time after school so they could improve their articles.

---------------
JennaMB says, "Like I said at the beginning these students are very high
achievers so they wanted a perfect article."

JennaMB says, "Along with wanting to learn more in Spanish and
               especially with Technology."

JennaMB projects Best.
---------------
The best part of the project was implementing Microsoft Publisher. When
the students had finished their articles, I provided a template for the
newsletter with sections already layed out for the articles. After a
brief introduction on day one, the students explored Publisher to paste
in their articles. The amount of interest in learning the program
increased as we found some glitches in the program. The students wanted
to trouble shoot on their own and show me they had solved the problems.

JimL says, "check to see if its in a hidden window (a browser window

ElizabethT says, "i see it jenna"

JennaMB says, "Mine says the server not available.."

JillMM says, "got it Jenna"

ElizabethT says, "it was behind things"

BrianME says, "i see it"

JennaMB says, "Any way the students were extremely excited about
publishing their work and sharing it."

JimL asks, "Very nice, Jenna. Questions?"

PatriciaDM asks, "Did your students write newsletter in English and
                  Spanish or just one language?"

LeonardF says, "The JPegs are loading slowly"

GlendaB asks, "Jenna, what software program did they use to desktop
               publish?"

JennaMB says, "The just wrote in English because this is first year.
               The captions are in Spanish."

MuffyP exclaims, "Very nice Jenna!"

TimAR says, "Your site looks great Jenna...."

JennaMB says, "We used Microsoft Publisher."

ElizabethT asks, "DId you publish a hard copy of anything?"

JillMM says, "It looks great, Jenna"

DebB <- nice job Jenna>
JennaMB says, "Definately a hard copy."

GlendaB asks, "Did Publisher convert well?"

JennaMB says, "It took some work but in the end is very easy, just like
               Word"

ElizabethT exclaims, "GReat job!"

JennaMB exclaims, "The students are soo excited for Issue 2!"

SusanH exclaims, "Muy bien!"

MuffyP asks, "How often do you plan on releasing the issues?"

JennaMB says, "We had thought every two months, but the motivation is
               driving more."

PatriciaDM asks, "As students progress, do you see a version written in
                  Spanish?"

TerenceS asks, "did you get feedback from parents or others outside the
                class?"

LeonardF says, "It looks real nice. What edition of Publisher did you
use. I have an older one which I don't believe has
                conversiton to HTML"

JennaMB says, "Now that they have learnig the program no problems"

JennaMB says, "I would love to see more in Spanish and Issue two is a
               possibliy of small articles."

ElizabethT says, "Wow. That's a lot of work. They MUST be motivatied."

JennaMB says, "We used 2000"

PatriciaDM exclaims, "Wonderful project!"

JennaMB says, "I am really lucky with these students."

TerenceS exclaims, "looks great!"

JimL holds up a BIG sign: Muy Bien, Jenna!
BrianME says, "very nice"

JennaMB says, "The district is excited and are giving feedback along
               with the parents."

JimL applauds!

GlendaB exclaims, "Good Job JEnna!!"

JennaMB says, "Gracias"

JimL says, "Next is Jane Blanton. Jane--"

JaneGB says, "I'm pasting the URL for my web site for you to click on if
              you'd like to have alook.
              http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/jblanton/janesproject3/index.htm"

JaneGB says, "The intent of my major project was to provide second and
third grade teachers with easily accessible, usable ideas
that would help them with the teaching of reading. My
beginning plan was to specifically find lessons that
integrated technology into the reading curriculum."

JaneGB says, "My web site actually turned out to be more of a resource
site with links for teachers to explore. My biggest
concern was that teachers don't have enough time to
"filter" through all the sites for usable ideas. Then
again I thought it might be too limiting without choices.
I didn't find "lots" of actual lesson plans that integrated
              technology and reading type lessons."

JaneGB says, "My web site has three main links: a page with favorite
authors and their web sites, a page with web sites of
interest for teachers of reading, and a page with photos of
book covers. The authors' pages provide biographical
information about the author, tell about their books,
provide contests for students to enter, and have various
other aspects of interest to teachers and students. The
interests for teachers page provides a variety of Internet
sites that offer good resources and ideas for use. The
page of book covers just provides that good look at what an
illustrator can do to "draw" a person into the book."

JaneGB says, "I am not in the classroom teaching anymore, but I am in
many classrooms with my job. The Quality Assurance reports
that we leave with schools now include recommendations for
school improvement. Many times one of the recommendations
is on technology and how it can be better incorporated into
classroom instruction. I'd sure like to be able to provide
teachers with places to look and ideas to help them with
this type of recommendation. That's the main reason I
wanted my project to focus on this area."

JaneGB says, "5 classroom teachers evaluated my site. They all stated
that the purpose was made clear, and that it was easy to
              navigate and user friendly."

JaneGB says, "When it came to what they found helpful, each teacher
listed different ideas. One liked the scholastic site and
teacher site. Another liked the links for favorite authors
and also the 4blocks reading site. One liked the games and
book sites and another the live interviews with authors
site. A second grade teacher reported that she had many of
the links, but was glad to add some new ones and would be
incorporating them into her reading curriculum."

JaneGB says, "3 of the 5 teachers said the site didn't really require a
lot of time to explore. The 2 others said they needed more
time and didn't really have enough time to look at it all.
This was and still is my biggest concern. A teacher's time
is valuable, and there isn't enough time in the day to get
              everything done."

JaneGB says, "Most of all I was pleased that when asked if they learned
anything new from the site they all said yes and
appreciated the links being on one site. I didn't know if
I really offered enough choices. Once again, I just didn't
want to provide so many that they would feel overwhelmed.
I think they all did find links that they wanted to go back
to - for educational games, ideas for reading nights at
school and research on 4blocks. I can explain 4 blocks if
not everyone is familiar with it."

JaneGB exclaims, "I loved teaching reading and loved reading to my
students. I had fun with the site and know there could
be many improvements to make it better. One suggestion
was that I provide a brief description of each site
right above it - this was a good idea. Two teachers
suggested they'd like more links to explore. Another
said more pictures would be good. Hopefully I'll get
better at this and can do more next time!"

JimL asks, "very nice, Jane. Questions?"

PatriciaDM says, "You are right, it is hard to find good reading
                  resources incorporating technology."

SusanH asks, "Where did you find your teachers to survey?"

TerenceS says, "Jane 4blocks is just getting introduced in my part of
IL, any resources are helpful, because those who have
                seen it like the material"

JillMM says, "Jane, thought the cover idea was neat. My 2nd grader
could make up stories from covers"

JaneGB says, "I asked some teachers at the school I used to teach at
              and some other local schools"

ElizabethT says, "I like that you had a lot of links for teachers to
                  explore."

JennaMB says, "Have you checked out KIKO in tappedin? It has some other
               great resources."

JennaMB exclaims, "I loved the book covers!"

JillMM says, "love Kiko"

JaneGB says, "I did find some neat resources at Tapped in that I'd like
              to add to it"

JimL holds up a BIG sign: Great job, Jane!

GlendaB says, "SUPER!! Have you thought about sendingit to Eunice"

ElizabethT says, "I'll be there."

JimL says, "Let's break for lunch (real rather than virtual). Meet in
our WebBoard chat at 1:10pm. During the lunch break, you
should restart your computer. If you heavily use web
browsers, they sometimes run out of memory and crash."

TerenceS says, "Jane super job and I'll see everyone after lunch :)))"
