USING TAPPED IN
If all goes well, you should see two new windows open:

  • A Web window with a building diagram ("room map") of the Reception area
  • A smaller Java window, "TAPestry", which allows you to type commands, move around the TAPPED IN world, and communicate in real-time with others in TAPPED IN.

You will normally be dealing with two separate windows in TAPPED IN at the same time. These two windows will automatically pop frontward or backward depending on actions you take.  An action you make in one should update the other.  To get from one window to the other, just click on the window in the background.

Almost all typing of commands and "Chat" dialog will take place in the TAPestry window (Java applet);  movement from room to room ("navigation") is most easily done in the Web window, clicking on places you wish to go.

FINDING THE CTER ROOM (first timers)

You automatically enter TAPPED IN in the Reception area (unless you specify otherwise).

1) Click on the Elevator on the room diagram of the Reception to move up and down the "building".  There are many floors in addition to the Reception floor.

2) Click on 5th Floor, where the CTER office is.

3) Click on East Wing.

4)  Click on room E511. You will enter CTER room that looks like this:

5) In the TAPestry window, type:  /SETHOME

This specifies the CTER room as your entry point after log-in from now on.  To get back from anywhere else on the TAPPED IN site, type /HOME.

6) Try a little navigation practice:

  • Click on "out" on the E511 room diagram to leave the room and go out into the hall. (You may choose to wander a bit.) Click on E511 to go back in the room.
  • Type /RECEPTION  in the TAPestry window to go directly ("teleport") to the reception area. (The map window will update to show the Reception.) Test your new "home" option, by typing /HOME from reception, or click on the Home link.  You'll find yourself back in E511 (our CTER room).
  • Click on Floorplan on the right side of the Web window to see a plan of the entire CTER building.  You can click anywhere on it to go there.

7) Type @QUIT to log off of TAPPED IN.
