(5:54 PM) You have just entered room “EdPsy387 Chat.”

(5:58 PM) MaggieISU99 has entered the room.

jlevinjal (5:58 PM): Hi Maggie.

MaggieISU99 (5:58 PM): hi jim

jlevinjal (5:58 PM): How's it going?

MaggieISU99 (5:58 PM): I was wondering about the white papers assignment

jlevinjal (5:58 PM): Sure, go ahead.

MaggieISU99 (5:59 PM): Does our group have to do the one you assigned in cbase or do we have to agree on one?

jlevinjal (6:00 PM): I'd like you to do the one assigned, or find another group to swap with (ie. I'd like each white paper reviewed). You don't like the one you now have?

MaggieISU99 (6:00 PM): No, we like it, we were just confused on what we had to do, chose or be assigned.

MaggieISU99 (6:00 PM): Now, how are we supposed to revise it?

MaggieISU99 (6:01 PM): are we supposed to publish it somewhere? On the webboard?

jlevinjal (6:01 PM): Okay, copy the file (or files, in some case), divide up the paper among your group, verify all the links and either fix or remove broken links.

jlevinjal (6:02 PM): Then, add at least one new link. Then put the file(s) onto someone's web space.

MaggieISU99 (6:02 PM): oh, so don't fix any of the language or anything..

jlevinjal (6:02 PM): Then post into WebBoard the URL, what you did, and any suggestions for major revision.

jlevinjal (6:02 PM): You can fix any minor language problems you find also.

jlevinjal (6:02 PM): I just don't want you to have to spend too much time on this.

MaggieISU99 (6:03 PM): oh, ok.

jlevinjal (6:03 PM): Is that clear? I'll try to augment what it says in the syllabus.

jlevinjal (6:03 PM): To copy the files, just load them into a web browser, and "Save As" making sure to save as web pages or html, not just Text.

MaggieISU99 (6:04 PM): So the only thing we are using the group members for is to share the work, we are exchanging ideas

jlevinjal (6:04 PM): Sort of the way you copied the eportfolio template.

jlevinjal (6:04 PM): Well, I'm imagining that the group will divide up the work.

jlevinjal (6:04 PM): and then pull it all back together again into one revised paper.

jlevinjal (6:06 PM): Have you been in touch with Dia and Alli yet?

MaggieISU99 (6:06 PM): how will we fix the links? We can't actually get into the web site, right? we just point out that they are broken?

jlevinjal (6:06 PM): No, you can "copy" the web site to your own local computer, then make the changes to the copy.

MaggieISU99 (6:06 PM): They have sent me email, and were going to ask you the first question that I asked you.

MaggieISU99 (6:07 PM): ok, so make the changes in our OWN composer

jlevinjal (6:07 PM): So, the first step would be to go to the white paper page. Then Save As, then make the changes in your favorite web editor.

MaggieISU99 (6:08 PM): ok, thats pretty easy, I think I get it now!

jlevinjal (6:08 PM): When all done (and all your groups changes have been combined into one "master" copy), you'll put it back on one of your web folders.

jlevinjal (6:08 PM): Great, let me know how it goes.

MaggieISU99 (6:08 PM): do we combine the paper?

jlevinjal (6:09 PM): Yes, I want one copy, - put at the top after the authors "Revised by Alli, Dia, Maggie" or however you want to be listed.

jlevinjal (6:10 PM): Then, when you're all done, I'll copy that revised copy back to the original server, where others can see it.

MaggieISU99 (6:10 PM): So we have to report our corrections to each other and then one of us submits it? Sorry, I just want to make sure I don't goof this up.

jlevinjal (6:11 PM): You can do it that way if you want.

MaggieISU99 (6:11 PM): ok.

jlevinjal (6:11 PM): How's everything else going?

MaggieISU99 (6:11 PM): I have another question, hang one one sec...

jlevinjal (6:11 PM): sure

MaggieISU99 (6:12 PM): If I am posting something (like a web site) on the server, I just paste it into the web folder?

MaggieISU99 (6:12 PM): My web folder.

jlevinjal (6:12 PM): Don't you drag and drop?

MaggieISU99 (6:13 PM): for some reason thatg doesn't work.. at orientation John showed me how to do it using paste.

jlevinjal (6:13 PM): That is, once you type in the https:// URL, doesn't it make your web folder appear on your desktop?

jlevinjal (6:13 PM): You using Mac or Windows?

MaggieISU99 (6:14 PM): yeah, it does make that appear, but dragging and dropping doesn't make it go in the folder

MaggieISU99 (6:14 PM): Windows

jlevinjal (6:14 PM): What happens when you drag and drop? Nothing?

MaggieISU99 (6:15 PM): nothing.. one of those circles with a line through it, like a no smoking sign.

jlevinjal (6:15 PM): Hmm, let me check with the CTER tech folks about this. But if paste works, that go for it.

MaggieISU99 (6:15 PM): it did that on the computer at UIUC and mine here.

jlevinjal (6:15 PM): Which version of Windows?

MaggieISU99 (6:15 PM): XP

jlevinjal (6:16 PM): Okay, and what version of IE?

MaggieISU99 (6:17 PM): oh geez, I am trying to remember if it's the one I had or the one I loaded from you guys.

jlevinjal (6:17 PM): Do you have IE running now?

MaggieISU99 (6:17 PM): I think it's the original one from my computer, but it's the latest because I just bought it

MaggieISU99 (6:17 PM): Yes, you are talking about explorer, right>

jlevinjal (6:18 PM): sorry, yes, IE is Internet Explorer

MaggieISU99 (6:18 PM): just ckecking

MaggieISU99 (6:19 PM): anyway, paste works for me! Then does the server give it an address?

MaggieISU99 (6:20 PM): Like if I post a new page in my web foler, what will the URL be?

jlevinjal (6:20 PM): It should have the same name as the file you copied?

jlevinjal (6:21 PM): I'll have to check with the CTER tech folks about this. In any case, can't you look into the web folder on your desktop to see what file just appeared?

MaggieISU99 (6:21 PM): hang on one sec...

MaggieISU99 (6:23 PM): ok, I figured it out! I just needed you here for moral support!

jlevinjal (6:24 PM): Glad to be here.

MaggieISU99 (6:24 PM): Alright, I'm going for a bike ride. AFTER I email alli and tell her what you said! Thanks Jim!

jlevinjal (6:24 PM): Sure, have a great ride.

(6:24 PM) MaggieISU99 has left the room.
