(2:58 PM) You have just entered room “EdPsy387 Chat.”

tdieken (2:58 PM):   I'm trying to add narration to my PPT show and when it uploads it delays

jlevinjal (2:58 PM): Hi folks.  Tonya and ? (who is roxydirector)?

roxydirector (2:58 PM):   Dia

jlevinjal (2:58 PM): Hi Dia.

roxydirector (2:58 PM):   I've missed all the chats this week so I thought I'd check in

tdieken (2:59 PM):   how are you doing?

jlevinjal (2:59 PM): They're all logged.

roxydirector (2:59 PM):   OK

jlevinjal (2:59 PM): Pretty good - how about you two?

roxydirector (2:59 PM):   Seems like I've spent about 5 or 6 hours a day on the computer this week though.

tdieken (2:59 PM):   just trouble shooting everything

tdieken (2:59 PM):   me too!

roxydirector (3:00 PM):   Actually, that's conservative...

jlevinjal (3:00 PM): Well, these summer 4 week courses tend to be intensive.

tdieken (3:00 PM):   how much time would you say per week, we will spend in the fall?

roxydirector (3:01 PM):   So it will be less intensive come fall?

jlevinjal (3:01 PM): Just make sure you have your computers set up so you're comfortable.

jlevinjal (3:01 PM): Yes, the courses will be spread over 15 weeks.

(3:01 PM) mrsjohn2308 has entered the room.

roxydirector (3:01 PM):   Thank God!

jlevinjal (3:01 PM): So there will be about 1/4 the work per week.

jlevinjal (3:01 PM): Hi Elise.

tdieken (3:01 PM):   Hi Elise

mrsjohn2308 (3:01 PM):  Hi everyone

roxydirector (3:01 PM):   Hi Elise

mrsjohn2308 (3:01 PM):  Who is roxydirector?

jlevinjal (3:02 PM): That's Dia.

roxydirector (3:02 PM):   Dia

mrsjohn2308 (3:02 PM):  Oh, hi Dia

jlevinjal (3:02 PM): Why the name roxydirector, Dia?

roxydirector (3:02 PM):   Hi

roxydirector (3:02 PM):   I'm the orchestra director for a theater group called the Roxy Group.

jlevinjal (3:03 PM): Ok, that might help me remember.

jlevinjal (3:03 PM): Is this a school group or community group?

roxydirector (3:03 PM):   Community

roxydirector (3:03 PM):   We put on "Concert Musicals" at New Salem Visitor Center twice a year.

jlevinjal (3:04 PM): Do you have to dress up in period costumes?

(3:04 PM) kragged has entered the room.

roxydirector (3:04 PM):   No, since they're concert musicals, we usually do Black evening dresses.

jlevinjal (3:04 PM): Who is kragged?

jlevinjal (3:04 PM): Welcome, whoever.

roxydirector (3:04 PM):   Hi John

kragged (3:04 PM):   kitzmiller

mrsjohn2308 (3:04 PM):  Hey John

kragged (3:05 PM):   howdy all!

jlevinjal (3:05 PM): Welcome John Ki.

jlevinjal (3:05 PM): (we also have another John K., as I discovered from one assignment that was signed John K.)

jlevinjal (3:05 PM): Any questions or issues with the course?

roxydirector (3:05 PM):   Oh, yeah Kelsey

tdieken (3:05 PM):   Hi John-just sent email

roxydirector (3:06 PM):   Looking ahead to next week, I assume theppt we are to watch will tell us how to imbed video in a web page?

mrsjohn2308 (3:06 PM):  I read it and still am having difficulty embedding the audio clip into my webpage.

jlevinjal (3:07 PM): Well, the simple way is to just link to it (as if it were an html file - same for audio.

roxydirector (3:07 PM):   I plan on trying to readit tomorrow.

tdieken (3:07 PM):   my audio and the presentation is very slow and I'm using DSL

mrsjohn2308 (3:07 PM):  Thought I tried it and still couldn't get it to link.

jlevinjal (3:08 PM): What happened, Elise, when you tried the link?

mrsjohn2308 (3:08 PM):  It would never take the link - that is, it would not let me click on it - it was shaded out.

jlevinjal (3:09 PM): What web editor are you using?

mrsjohn2308 (3:09 PM):  Netscape Composer, I think

jlevinjal (3:09 PM): Ok, so you highlighted the text for the link, then clicked on the link tool (the chain link icon)?

mrsjohn2308 (3:10 PM):  Yes

jlevinjal (3:10 PM): Then you typed in the URL for the audio? Was that audio file on your web server space or on some other web server?

mrsjohn2308 (3:11 PM):  I thought it was on my web server space.

jlevinjal (3:11 PM): So you typed just the name of the file as the URL?

mrsjohn2308 (3:11 PM):  That is all that would come up

jlevinjal (3:11 PM): (or better yet, copied the name and pasted it in?)

mrsjohn2308 (3:11 PM):  of course

jlevinjal (3:12 PM): So is the link blue and underlined?

mrsjohn2308 (3:12 PM):  It would not let me save the link

mrsjohn2308 (3:12 PM):  It was shaded gray

jlevinjal (3:12 PM): What did it say when it wouldn't let you save the link?

mrsjohn2308 (3:12 PM):  Nothing - it looked like it was waiting for something else before save would be highlighted

jlevinjal (3:13 PM): What's the name of the audio file?

mrsjohn2308 (3:13 PM):  I will keep trying - you know it usually takes me many times before I get it

jlevinjal (3:13 PM): Ok, but if it still doesn't work after a couple tries, let me or  cter-tech  know.  Don't want you (or any of you) to get TOO frustrated.

jlevinjal (3:13 PM):

jlevinjal (3:14 PM): Any other questions about the multimedia assignment?

tdieken (3:14 PM):   Jim, if we researched new sites for non-existent links, does this count as extending the paper?

jlevinjal (3:15 PM): I'm not sure what you mean by "non-existent

tdieken (3:15 PM):   white papers, sorry

tdieken (3:15 PM):   links where the site is no longer available

jlevinjal (3:15 PM): By "non-existent links" do you mean broken links?

jlevinjal (3:15 PM): I want you to do that. but I also want you to add at least one new link also.

tdieken (3:15 PM):   possibly; some just needed to be update to a site that exists;

kragged (3:15 PM):   let's get a definition here.

jlevinjal (3:15 PM): That's the "new direction"

jlevinjal (3:16 PM): Ok, JohnKi

kragged (3:16 PM):   A link that is moved to a new place is easy to fix.

kragged (3:16 PM):   A link that cannot be traced needs to be researched and replaced with something new.

tdieken (3:16 PM):   yeah, but finding one that supports the info takes quite a bit of research

tdieken (3:16 PM):   ditto what john said

kragged (3:17 PM):   the latte is altogether a "different kettle of fish"

kragged (3:17 PM):   latter, not latte

jlevinjal (3:17 PM): Latte is good also.

kragged (3:17 PM):   not fish flavored

roxydirector (3:17 PM):   We can eliminate links that aren't fixable tho, can't we?

roxydirector (3:17 PM):   As long as we don't eliminate a lot of them.

tdieken (3:18 PM):   i don't think our group was clear on that when we started, Dia

jlevinjal (3:18 PM): I certainly don't want to discourage the research to replace the link, but I think Dia has hit on what I'd suggest if you have trouble fixing the link - just delete it.

tdieken (3:18 PM):   what about the info that goes with it?  leave it?

jlevinjal (3:18 PM): I don't want this assignment to be a BIG thing.

kragged (3:18 PM):   but they support important issues in the text!

kragged (3:18 PM):   it got way too big for our group methinks

tdieken (3:18 PM):   yep

jlevinjal (3:19 PM): For now, just leave it, but make a suggestion that the CTER4 group that deals with this next month find new links.

roxydirector (3:19 PM):   So, leave the text, but remove the link?

jlevinjal (3:19 PM): That is, leave the text, delete the link, suggest that the next group to deal with it find new links.

kragged (3:19 PM):   we've already found them! where's the money!?!

tdieken (3:20 PM):   yeah!

roxydirector (3:20 PM):   Do we leave a notation that the link was removed?

jlevinjal (3:20 PM):

kragged (3:20 PM):   how dooo u doo that?

tdieken (3:20 PM):

roxydirector (3:20 PM):

jlevinjal (3:20 PM): You can leave a note - but also put it into your webboard report of changes you made and suggestions you make.

kragged (3:20 PM):   my daughter is at camp so she can't show me emoticons

tdieken (3:20 PM):   click on the little face then choose one

roxydirector (3:21 PM):   Do we each make our own web board report

roxydirector (3:21 PM):   Or do we put that all together in one also?

jlevinjal (3:21 PM): Sure, report on what you did for your part of the group project.  I want the modified paper all together, but separate webboard reports.

mrsjohn2308 (3:22 PM):  My group is having trouble with saving the WHOLE paper on one computer - That is a ton of pages for our paper!

jlevinjal (3:22 PM): That will help me deal with groups where one person didn't help.

jlevinjal (3:22 PM): How many pages, Elise?

mrsjohn2308 (3:23 PM):  Well, with the Free Speech paper, my section has about 10 pages, Jeff's has a ton, and the last section also has a bunch.

tdieken (3:23 PM):   oh my!

mrsjohn2308 (3:23 PM):  How can I get it to save the entire paper?  It only saves it one page at a time

mrsjohn2308 (3:24 PM):  OOPs  mine has 7

jlevinjal (3:24 PM): Okay, for the white papers that have a bunch of pages that you're able to separate and each change one, just tell me in your webboard report what folder or directory you've put them in, and I'll copy them and combine them.

mrsjohn2308 (3:24 PM):  Sounds better, thanks.  I'll let Jeff and Mary know.  She showed up today at last!

roxydirector (3:25 PM):   What do you mean by folder or directory?

jlevinjal (3:25 PM): For the 7 pages, just load each into the browser, then Save As (Source).  Do that seven times.

jlevinjal (3:25 PM): Put them all into one folder or directory, so I can easily fine them when they're on your web space.

mrsjohn2308 (3:25 PM):  I can do that just fine

jlevinjal (3:26 PM): That is, put your 7 into a folder, and then have Mary and Jeff do the same with their pages on their web spaces.

jlevinjal (3:26 PM): You can create new folders/directories in your web space, Dia.

roxydirector (3:26 PM):   Do we load them into our web folder like our web pages?

jlevinjal (3:27 PM): I suggest that you do that for each new CTER course after this one.

jlevinjal (3:27 PM): Yes, load the modified White Paper files into your web folder, then put the URL to it/them in your webboard posting.

jlevinjal (3:28 PM): For groups that just have one or a few pages, I suggest one member be the "keeper of the master file".

kragged (3:28 PM):   Hey Jim, the (Source) deal. Is that a netscape feature?

jlevinjal (3:28 PM): Then, all changes by the others would be sent to that person, who wouldl put all changes into one file.  Then when all done, copy that to your web folder.

kragged (3:29 PM):   sorry to interrupt, i'll wait

jlevinjal (3:29 PM): Yes, Netscape gives options of Text or Source. IE gives options of "Web Archive", "HTML Source" or "Plain Text".  I suggest HTML Source.

jlevinjal (3:30 PM): Dia, to finish, then the group is all done, the one or few files would be uploaded to the "keeper of the master file's" webspace, and each group member would post that URL in their webboard posting.

kragged (3:30 PM):   IE gives: "complete, archive, html only or text"

jlevinjal (3:31 PM): Oh, a difference between Mac IE and Win IE.  I'm not sure, but definitely DO NOT select Text.

jlevinjal (3:31 PM): If you do, you'll lose all the formatting.

kragged (3:31 PM):   actually that's what I ended up doing to save the workbench results! It was the only thing that worked.

jlevinjal (3:32 PM): Some folks did that with the eportfolio template, and lost the formatting of that template.

jlevinjal (3:32 PM): Well, for the Web Evaluation Workbench, there was not much formatting to lose, at least.

kragged (3:32 PM):   little if any, but i'm not helping dia with conglomerating her white paper....

jlevinjal (3:33 PM): It suggests in fact, just copying and pasting.

jlevinjal (3:33 PM): As I remember the structure of the white papers, most are just one file, but some are several, and I remember at least one (Elise's group) that is many files.

jlevinjal (3:34 PM): For the one file, you'll definately need to have one person as the keeper of the master file.

jlevinjal (3:34 PM): For the others, if you can divide up the files so that each person is working on just one, then that's not necessary.

jlevinjal (3:34 PM): I mean, so that each file is worked on by only one person.

jlevinjal (3:35 PM): Have I totally confused the issue?

jlevinjal (3:35 PM): (that's the icon for "foot in mouth")

mrsjohn2308 (3:36 PM):  I must admit, this was a confusing assignment

mrsjohn2308 (3:36 PM):  but I think we're "on the road again"!

jlevinjal (3:36 PM): I'll clarify the syllabus yet again, and certainly the next CTER groups will be less confused (I hope).

roxydirector (3:36 PM):   When I save it, shouldn't I then be able to edit it?

roxydirector (3:37 PM):   I just tried to do that and it wouldn't let me.

jlevinjal (3:37 PM): Yes, save it to your local hard disk, then edit it.  What web editor are you using?

kragged (3:37 PM):   u need to load it into the editor

roxydirector (3:37 PM):   Oh, ok

roxydirector (3:37 PM):   I forgot to do that

jlevinjal (3:38 PM): It's very much like what you did at orientation with the eportfolio template.

jlevinjal (3:38 PM): But for some groups, you have to do that repeatedly, with each separate file in the white paper.

roxydirector (3:38 PM):   That was a million years ago!

jlevinjal (3:39 PM): Just trying to make connections

roxydirector (3:39 PM):

jlevinjal (3:40 PM): You folks are really developing some great major projects!  Any questions about that process?

roxydirector (3:40 PM):   So, I make my changes then how do I get them to our keeper of the Master Files?

kragged (3:40 PM):   email works

roxydirector (3:40 PM):   that's what I thought. Just making sure.

jlevinjal (3:41 PM): Are your changes in the same file as changes others in your group are making?  yes, email works.

roxydirector (3:41 PM):   For the final presentation, do we use the web site we created this week and update it?

roxydirector (3:42 PM):   I'm talking about the major project.

jlevinjal (3:42 PM): Everyone is to look through all the other major project report sites and major projects.  For the presentation, you can show parts of either site, but try to focus on the most important/most interesting things you've learned, rather

jlevinjal (3:42 PM): than trying to show everything.

jlevinjal (3:43 PM): THat is, everyone looks at your report and site ahead of time.  Assume they've seen both in making your presentation.

tdieken (3:43 PM):   could you remind me where to look to see how we will be presenting this?

jlevinjal (3:43 PM): Start out with a brief reminder of what you did, then focus on most important/most interesting.

jlevinjal (3:43 PM): Look, Tonya, in the syllabus page for final project.

jlevinjal (3:44 PM): I have links there to the logs of presentations from last year's CTER4 group in this class.

roxydirector (3:45 PM):   Do we have a date and time for this presentation?

jlevinjal (3:45 PM): The link in syllabus is to "major project"

tdieken (3:45 PM):   sorry its been a while since i looked at that--you're right!

jlevinjal (3:45 PM): Starts at 9am on Saturday, July 6th (ie. next Sat), and continues until we're done.

jlevinjal (3:45 PM): 9am CDT

roxydirector (3:45 PM):   OK, I knew we had set it, but couldn't remember what it was.

jlevinjal (3:46 PM): I'll send out a note via email on that today or tomorrow, since I need to hear from everyone what mechanism they're going to use, Webboard chat, TAPPED IN or AIM chat.

kragged (3:46 PM):   Jim, I think you've answered my question--it is better to create a new site for the project rather than just link to the project part in our eportfolio?

jlevinjal (3:47 PM): I wouldn't both to create a new site just for the presentation - put that effort into augmenting your project or your project reprot.

jlevinjal (3:47 PM): bother, not both

kragged (3:47 PM):   thanku, thanku, thanku, and thanks!

roxydirector (3:48 PM):   I think tapped in would be a great setting for this since you can "project" web links.

jlevinjal (3:48 PM): Yes, that's a nice feature of TAPPED IN.  You can paste in URL here or in Webboard chat, but you have to depend on people clicking on them.

mrsjohn2308 (3:48 PM):  I didn't think we would have time to "project" on that day with all of the projects.

jlevinjal (3:49 PM): each person will get 8 minutes - some last year used some of their time to project one or two pages.

mrsjohn2308 (3:49 PM):  OH, I see.

jlevinjal (3:49 PM): But obviously you won't be able to show/project everything.

jlevinjal (3:50 PM): or even to talk about everything you did.

jlevinjal (3:50 PM): So, focus on the most interesting/most important things to come out of your project for the presentation next Sat.

kragged (3:50 PM):   salience

jlevinjal (3:50 PM): salience?

kragged (3:50 PM):   the salient parts

jlevinjal (3:51 PM): yes, the most salient parts.

tdieken (3:51 PM):   thanks for the input-gotta go!

jlevinjal (3:51 PM): Ok, cu later Tonya.

roxydirector (3:51 PM):   I'm going to sign off now. It's my husband's birthday. Gotta go whip up a big meal.

tdieken (3:51 PM):   have fun!

mrsjohn2308 (3:51 PM):  I'm off too, graduation party

jlevinjal (3:51 PM): Hey, wish him happy birthday Dia.

(3:51 PM) tdieken has left the room.

mrsjohn2308 (3:52 PM):  bye

roxydirector (3:52 PM):   I will.

jlevinjal (3:52 PM): Wow, everyone's celebrating

(3:52 PM) roxydirector has left the room.

jlevinjal (3:52 PM): Best wishes to the grad.

(3:52 PM) mrsjohn2308 has left the room.

jlevinjal (3:52 PM): Any celebrations scheduled, John?

kragged (3:52 PM):   Germany's victory of course!

jlevinjal (3:53 PM): You're certain about that?

kragged (3:53 PM):   against all odds

jlevinjal (3:53 PM): What time is the final?

kragged (3:53 PM):   7:00 a.m. EDT

kragged (3:53 PM):   should be on ABC

jlevinjal (3:54 PM): not too bad - are they rescheduling church services in your neck of the woods?

kragged (3:54 PM):   no, but I had to check with my cable company to be sure it would be on, some carriers have services preshceduled.

jlevinjal (3:55 PM): Good watching then.

kragged (3:55 PM):   I'm still searching for good web authoring software.

jlevinjal (3:55 PM): I like Dreamweaver.

jlevinjal (3:55 PM): Have you tried that yet?

kragged (3:55 PM):   yeah, but that's a bundle isn't it?

kragged (3:56 PM):   $$$$

jlevinjal (3:56 PM): There's a student price you might want to look into (since you're now a UIUC student)

jlevinjal (3:56 PM): That's very reasonable.

jlevinjal (3:57 PM): Look at http://www.cstores.uiuc.edu/center/center.html

kragged (3:57 PM):   ok, I'll check. the few open source ones haven't been great, although I am attracted to that quadrant.

jlevinjal (3:57 PM): $88

jlevinjal (3:58 PM): Yes, free is good.

kragged (3:58 PM):   yup, just found it, I can swing that.

jlevinjal (3:59 PM): Let me know if you have difficulties ordering as a distant student.

kragged (3:59 PM):   you're a great resource (although I should've looked there myself) thank you!

jlevinjal (3:59 PM): What's the retail for Dreamweaver, approx.?

kragged (3:59 PM):   $300

jlevinjal (4:00 PM): QUITEa diff!

kragged (4:00 PM):   I'll place the diff on germany vegas odds!

jlevinjal (4:00 PM): Best of luck!

kragged (4:00 PM):   not really, i never gamble.

jlevinjal (4:00 PM): sure thing.

jlevinjal (4:01 PM): ok, any more questions?

kragged (4:01 PM):   well, I'm off to purchase and send the savings to somebody I already owe it to.

kragged (4:01 PM):   nope all set, thanks and bye.

jlevinjal (4:01 PM): ok, cu later.

(4:01 PM) kragged has left the room.

jerosend: Hey Jim - got a minute?

jlevinjal: Sure, what's up?

jerosend: Before I put my webboard posting up, take a look at http://students.ed.uiuc.edu/rosendah/project/index.htm

jlevinjal: Ok, I'm in the middle of the chat right now. Want me to do that a bit later, and then get back to you?

jerosend: Great thanks

jlevinjal: ok, cu later.
