MistyM says, "Poor Alli! She keeps getting disconnected."

JimL asks, "Okay, most everyone is here. (Hopefully Alli will
            reconnect.) John, you ready?"

JohnKe says, "Ok, We will see how this works."

KathleenJH has connected.
JohnKe says, "For my project, I created an excel spreadsheet unit
online. I have included online resources and tutors in an
attempt to make the lessons self guided and allow students
to work at their own pace."

JohnKe says, "Students are instructed to use a set of FAQs and other
online resources to help answer questions that may come
up."

JohnKe says, "I will project the project home page. Please resize the
window so that you can follow along."

JohnKe says, "project/

JimL says, "start with a /"

JohnKe projects the URL:

JohnKe says, "thanks jim"

JohnKe says, "There are seven activities for the students to complete.
Students will already have had several days of face to face
instruction before they will begin on these activities. The
activities start from the very basic with very detailed
instructions, to a final project with limited directions."

JohnKe says, "Although, the activities are not what makes this site
unique from face to face instruction. The online access
and resources are what will be the most useful to my
              students."

JohnKe says, "The project has two goals for student learning."

JohnKe says, "The first goal is to help the students become more
independent learners when using technology. In the past,
students have only used the help features included with
software applications to figure out problems on their own."

JohnKe says, "This is an attempt to show students that there are many
              more resources available to them."

KarenEd leaves for the HT.
KarenEd's personal recorder (recording) leaves for the HT.

you will see a variety of resources for the students."

JohnKe says, "I will project that page"

JohnKe projects the URL:

AllisonD has connected.

JohnKe says, "This is meant to guide the students towards resources
              without holding their hands."

JohnKe says, "The tutor The Magic Box is a great interactive tutor. I
will have all the students run through that tutor when I
              first introduce spreadsheets."

JohnKe says, "As students work through the various worksheets in class,
I will have to fight the temptation to help. The key is
encouraging them to find the answers on their own."

JohnKe says, "I suspect that the most valuable resource to them will be
the FAQ page. Located on the menu bar on the left."

JohnKe says, "I will project the FAQ page"

JohnKe projects the URL:

http://students.ed.uiuc.edu/jkelsey/EdPsy387/spreadsheet/faq.htm

JohnKe says, "The FAQs are aimed to answer questions specifically
related to the spreadsheet activities. I have included a
last resort Ask Mr. Kelsey link on the menu bar. This will
give the students a direct e-mail link to me."

JohnKe says, "As I get questions, I will add them the FAQ page. The FAQ
page can be accessed from the menu bar on the left."

JohnKe says, "The second goal of the project is to allow students to
              work at their own pace."

JohnKe says, "The ability for students to access the activities from
home gives them additional opportunities to work on them.
In a classroom where advanced students are fully integrated
with the special education students, this has the potential
              to become a great tool."

JohnKe says, "It will give students who are working at a slower pace
additional time to complete assignments they were not able
              to finish during class."

JohnKe says, "This site will be ever evolving to stay current with my
              students needs and helpful resources."

MistyM exclaims, "This is an excellent project, John...but I have yet to
see anything of yours look anything less than
                  professional!"

EliseJ says, "I like the Ask Mr. Kelsey option as a last resort."

MaryEB says, "wonderful site John"

BrianW says, "All your pages are great interactive tools to use with
              your students."

TonyaD asks, "Do your students have a study hall to work on this if
              necessary?"

VanessaU exclaims, "Wonderful presentation!"

ValarieLP exclaims, "This is excellent!"

HeatherfS says, "Glad to see some teachers are beginning to teach
students how to teach themselves early on."

DiaL says, "I think it's good that you will add more FAQ's as you get
            them."

PatGr says, "Perhaps adding a frequently asked questions page would be
helpful. I will add one to my site."

VanessaU projects CTER Project.
---------------
I have created a web page that my reading improvement could go to and
read stories online. I hope that students will be more likely to read
if technology is involved.

Like many people, I had big ideas but had to down scale. To make the
project more manageable I only have one story per category with the
exception of pooms. I learned that the stories for primary and
intermediate take more time than I thought. To make the web site more
personal, I had to create my own page for each page of the story instead
of just linking to the web site with the story. I like the effect it
has but it was more work.

I saved the "look" of the web page for last. I wanted color but also a
white background/black text for students to be able to read easily. As
a result I created a table and had my color on the outside and my
content in the inside. Links to each category and home were also added.

In the future, I would like to add more stories and categories. Current
events could be included on a weekly basis and stories relating to
curriculum could also be included. I would like to have a quiz or a
public forum for students to comment on stories also. Something similar
to the interactive paper or our webboard. These are all ways the web
site can grow, but just seemed too much to conquer in four weeks.

I learned a great deal about web page design. It was mostly little
things I never knew. For example, saving pictures instead of copying
and pasting or giving each page a title or being able to have a link

I am proud of the site and know I have had quite a bit of growth in my
technological knowledge.

Any questions or comments about my project?

students. What a fun way to read!"

VanessaU says, "Thank you."

HeatherfS says, "liked your composition of the page."

TonyaD says, "My son loved the Sniffy and Fluffy story--he wanted to
              read more from the computer!:)"

KarenEd says, "Very age- appropriate"

MistyM asks, "Very easy to navigate, and it's a great idea for kids. I
especially like the audio option. Can students read the
text while they listen to it?"

PatGr says, "I understand the scaling down. Your site is great."

JohnKe says, "speaking as a student who hated to read, this would have
              been great"

VanessaU says, "I was surprised at how many stories are out there online"

MaggieVa exclaims, "This site is so fun, Vanessa!"

JohnKe says, "I love Sniffy and Fluffy too"

VanessaU says, "On the audio link at the bottom they can"

TonyaD exclaims, "I think the final look is great too!"

DiaL says, "The final look is wonderful."

VanessaU exclaims, "Thanks everyone!"

AllisonD says, "yes, attractive page"

BrianW says, "well designed all aroung"

BrianW says, "around"

JoshWB says, "I like the layout."

            Ready, Dia?"

DiaL says, "Yes."

JimL says, "Go for it."

TimothyP has arrived.
TimothyP's personal recorder (recording) has arrived.
DiaL says, "I chose to build a web resource page for the fine arts
teachers of my district because I knew nothing about building
them. After we built our ePortfolios, my interest was peaked
and I wanted to know more. I am a band teacher, so it was
impractical to build something to teach in class."

DiaL says, "I started by following the tutorial in Claris Home Page to
find out all the ins and outs of web page building. I learned
to map out my planned page first so that I could catch any
problems before I actually started to build, such as needing
a home button to easily navigate back to the start page."

DiaL says, "At the same time, I began gathering information to be put on
the music and art pages. I sent out an email on our school
finearts reflector asking for information on who had risers,
microphones, videos, display boards or any other resources
that could be listed on the resource page. I also asked
permission to list the teachers email addresses."

DiaL says, "This phase was the most difficult in the summer time. I only
received 5 email responses, and 3 responses to phone calls.
The art teachers I talked to on the phone were most
uncooperative (sorry Heather). Most of the information will
have to be added and/or updated in the fall."

DiaL says, "I then built the pages, linked them and put them on the web
to test. I sent the address to the fine art teachers and 15
or 20 friends and family members for advice. They were very
helpful. I was lucky enough to only have to make a few
changes. Ill try to project the page for those that might
like to take a look now."

DiaL projects the URL:

http://students.ed.uiuc.edu/langellr/fineart.htm

DiaL exclaims, "The whole idea was to see if the fine arts director
position could be virtually eliminated through the use of
technology. Of course, it cant. There are things the fine
arts director does that cannot be done without human
interaction, such as scheduling. This includes setting up
the art and music teaching schedules, concert schedules,
art shows, contests, trips etc. Just try to tell our
district, which has decided not to have a fine arts
                director this year!"

DiaL says, "But it will help tremendously."

                  interested. Good project!"

TonyaD exclaims, "Very time-intesive project Dia! Especially reaching
all of those teachers in the summer. This will be a
                  great resource for your district!"

MistyM exclaims, "It's a great idea, Dia! What a lot of background work
                  must have gone into this!"

JohnKe says, "very nice, what a useful site. Nearly every department
who shares equipment could benifit from a site like this."

JoshWB says, "This is a great resource."

HeatherfS says, "I'm sorry to hear of your loss of your fine arts
director. Just don't let this page get too good or
they'll never bring it back. Sorry to say."
